During World War 2, Fremantle became home to one of the largest bases for Allied submarines in the Southern Hemisphere. There were up to 167 US, British and Dutch submariners throughout the war, however tensions between transient American and non-American soldiers often led to alcohol fuelled violence. In April 1944, a large fight broke out between some US servicemen and some New Zealand soldiers in The National Hotel. This resulted in two Maori soldiers being stabbed to death by the Americans. After an inquest, the US servicemen were acquitted on grounds of self-defence.
